Soft Drinks…. Are you killing your teeth?

December 21, 2021by admin0

It’s a well-known fact that soft drinks are not good for overall health and they have adverse effects on our teeth too.  Studies suggest that the acids in soft drinks dissolve the enamel of our teeth. In addition to sodas, even natural fruit drinks, as well as sports and high-energy drinks, can cause the protective layer of our teeth to become eroded.

There are two main dental effects of drinking soda: Erosion and Cavities

Erosion:

Erosion begins when the acids in soft drinks encounter the tooth enamel, which is the outermost protective layer on your teeth. The acid effect reduces the surface hardness of the enamel.

Sports drinks and fruit juices can also damage enamel.

Cavities:

Soft drinks, on the other hand, can also affect the next layer i.e. dentin, and even composite fillings. This damage to your tooth enamel can invite cavities. Cavities, or caries, develop over time in people who drink soft drinks regularly. Add in poor oral hygiene, and a lot of damage can occur to the teeth.

Dental erosion is serious because enamel once lost cannot be recovered. Over time, the function of the teeth is irreversibly changed. With today’s increased consumption of sugar-rich foods right from a young age, enamel erosion should be seriously considered and changing your food habits is a good place to start.

If you feel your teeth are increasingly sensitive or even think you may be susceptible to enamel erosion, it’s best to visit your dentist.
